Why do I need the BYOD Certificate?

All Queen Margaret’s staff and students can connect their personal devices to the school BYOD WiFi network.

In line with the latest Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance, we run content inspection filtering internet traffic. To enable us to do this, we require users to install an SSL Certificate on their device.

Content inspection filtering means that the school is able to see inside the secure web traffic that is transmitted between the web server and the web browser on your device. Normally this information would be encrypted and not visible to anyone except the company providing the website and yourself.

Installing this certificate will only allow the school to see your Internet traffic whilst you are connected to the school network. The school is only inspecting certain types of Internet traffic, to ensure the safety of those in its care. The school is not, and never will use this technology to gain access to users passwords, financial information or personal data. The categories of Internet traffic which are subject to content inspection are as follows:

  • Web searches (Google, Bing etc.)
  • YouTube
  • Blogs
  • Forums
  • Any website which is blocked through the filtering system

If you have any concerns over what is being inspected then you are welcome to discuss this matter further with Mr Witts or Mrs Davidson.

Please note

  • If you do not install the certificate, the internet on your device may not work correctly
  • If you have a VPN service, the internet will not work
  • If you have configured an external DNS provider, the internet will not work

Download the SSL certificate from the IT Support Links homepage and follow the instructions for your device.

Poor Mobile signal?

If you do not have a good mobile signal, there is a limited access WiFi account you can use to download the certificate.

Go to your WiFi settings and connect to QueenMargarets with the password 39993999. This will connect you without internet access and your phone may complain about that - just ignore for now as you only need access to the QM network.

When you have installed the certificate, go back to your WiFi settings and Forget the QueenMargarets network.
